The International Chess Federation (FIDE) is the governing body of the sport of chess, regulating all international chess competitions. Founded as a non-governmental institution, FIDE was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a Global Sporting Organization in 1999. Its headquarters is currently in Lausanne, though it was originally founded in 1924 in Paris under the motto “Gens una Sumus” (Latin for “We are one Family”). It was one of the first International Sports Federations, alongside those of Football, Cricket, Swimming, and Auto Racing. Today, it is one of the largest, with 201 member countries in the form of National Chess Federations. Chess is now a truly global sport, with millions of players across all continents and over 60 million games played daily on average.
